Carthage boasts a surprising array of neatly maintained late Victorian residential buildings with strong vernacular expression. Almost all buildings in the district original upper facades are intact. In many cases corbelling, consoling, and other masonry ornament miz with wood, stamped metal, or cast detail elements.
Each building on the square is listed separately, with address, name, year of construction, architectural type, and owner/builder. A narrative history of each building describes significant events and uses. The entry concludes with the name of present use and owner.
